Dakhma ("Tower of Silence")

Zoroastrian Culture from the Sassanid era (3rd to 7th century C.E.) in Persia and India; ossuaries, where the dead were brought to be exposed to carrion birds in the open air of the circular space; early constructions of these were first documented c. 860 C.E., usually located on forested high ground, some distance from residential areas; the pair of towers shown here are located on the western edge of Yazd, Iran.

Elevation is c. 1426 meters (4680 feet) above sea level.

Material: Stone, unfired and fired brick (no roof).
