Dur-Sharrukin, "Fortress of Sargon", (Khorsabad)

Assyrian Civilization; the city of Dur-Sharrukin was built in a decade, from 722 B.C.E. to 705 B.C.E, during the rule of Sargon II of Assyria, as the capital; upon the death of Sargon, the city was abandoned in 705 B.C.E. and the capital moved to Ninevah, 20 km to the South; located 15 km northeast of Mosul, Iraq.
The fortified outer wall, 24 meters thick, encloses an area of 740 acres (298 ha), Residential areas in large central space is not imaged here.

Elevation is c. 300 meters (984 feet) above sea level.

Materials: sun-dried earth (adobe) bricks covered with kiln-fired glased bricks
laid in natural occurring bitumen, wood beams and columns; sophisticated stone sculpture mounted throughout the complex.
