Hakiri Stage

Above: "Stage for Hakari or Feast given to Governor Grey in 1849 at the Bay of Islands to celebrate the peace between the two races", illustration from 'The Story of New Zealand', by Surgeon-Major, Dr. A..S. Thomson.

Moari Ancestral Culture, New Zealand, the Hākari Stage was constructed and used in pre-colonial times for ritual ceremonies, in which the entire structure was filled with gigantic amounts of foods to be given to villagers and visiting groups, as a symbol of generosity.

Elevation is close to sea level.

Materials: huge trees were cut down, transported to the designated place, put up vertically as the main cores and surrounded by some supports creating a braced pyramidal construction as much as 30 meters tall, with a base about 10 m across; every 2.5 to 3 meters, wooden horizontal platforms were added - forming as many as 10 or 8 of these stories.
