Yakhchal, Ice-making Architecture of Persia

Persian Culture, Yakhchal (ice pit), invented prior to 400 B.C.E. (date unknown). Used to make ice in the shallow pond north of the wall. The shadow of the east-west wall kept the water pond cooler, and during winter, the night time sky cooled the water to freeze. Blocks of ice were then stored under the heavy earthen dome, which was able to preserve the ice throughout summer months.

Materials: unfired mud brick.
