Gunung Padang (Mountain of Enlightenment)

Megalithic Sundanese culture of West Java, Indonesia; located in Cianjur Regency 2950 feet (900 meters) above sea level. The site is a stepped pyramid about 360 ft high (110 meters) with the visible top five terraces visible today and most of the lower terraces covered by erosion and jungle. The pyramid layered terraces are constructed of stacked megalithic prismatic basalt columns. The research team led by Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, Phd. senior geologist with the Research Center for Geotechnology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, using radiocarbon dating, ground-penetrating radar, seismic tomography and electrical resistivity, found that the monolithic stones had been placed at dates ranging from 12,000 to 24,000 years ago! The oldest stones were placed at depths of 90 feet (27.5 meters). This is therefore perhaps the oldest homo-sapiens archaeological architectural site in the world. The axis of the five top terraces is oriented to the peaks of the Gede-Pangrango volcanoes.

Elevation is c. 945 meters (3100 feet) above sea level.

Materials: stacked prismatic basalt columns.
