Hale O Pi' ILani Heiau (temple)

Hawaiian Islands Culture; the Hale O Pi' Ilani Heiau built near the town of Hana on the Island of Maui, and is the largest heiau (place of worship) on Maui, and the largest in Polynesia. Construction began in the early 13th century C.E. Built from basalt rocks, each blessed by priests, and carried by hand from as far away as Hana Bay, the heiau, is 104 x 126 meters. Consisting of several stepped terraces,13 meters high, it was built in stages over a gully between the leading edges of two lava flows, considered a significant engineering feat.
