Male and Female Hogans of the Diné

The Female Hogan
The Male Hogan

Diné (meaning "The People", also called Navajo or Navaho) Culture, is located in the Four Corners Region, the desert Southwest, United States. The people are of Athabascan cultural origin, who migrated from western Canada c.1600 C.E. The hunter-gatherer traditional Diné do not live in villages, instead live in separate traditional homes called hogans, with typical spacing of a kilometer (mile) or more, although hogans of clan families may form a hometead with neighborhood proximity. Water is typically hauled to the homestead from nearby springs and wells. Navajos, culturally distinct from Southwest Puebloan and Apache tribes, maintain their religion and original Athabascan language. The hogan is the focus of the Diné spiritual tradition, acting as a kind of psycho-cosmogram, where ceremonial prayers and dances are performed. The plan layout for the hogan can be round or polygonal, but cannot be a rectangular or square.
