Honden of Izumo Taisha

Shinto Shrine, perhaps the most important in Japan, constructed in 477 C.E., located in the city of Izumo in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Taisha-Tsukuri architectural style; beginning in c. 700 C.E.; this Honden is demolished every 60 years, and rebuilt on adjacent alternate sites--a process called sengu. As the Honden was rebuilt, each time, it changed appearance. The version shown here is 48 meters high, and the diameter of the 10 tree columns is 2-3 meters (!) The Honden is the place where the diety resides. The Ise Shrine is shown for scale.

Elevation is c.13 meters(43 feet) above sea level.
