Jomon ("cord pattern") Pit House

Ancient Japanese Jomon and Yoyoi hunter-gatherer cultures (pre-agricultural), in Hokkaido, North Tohoku, Honshu, and Coastal Japan beginning at 14,000 B.C.E. This type of pithouse was inhabited from 10,000 B.C.E to 300 B.C.E.

Elevation: villages were located near coastlines.

Materials: Wood roof structure over earthen depression; thatch roof.
