Maeshowe
Neolithic Scottish culture, chambered cairn and passage tomb, located on Mainland Orkney, Scotland near Skara Brae; it was built c. 3000 BCE to 2800 BCE, using carefully crafted stone slabs weighing as much as 30 tons. The entrance passage which is 3 feet high and 36 feet long leads to the central nearly square chamber measuring 15 feet each side, and covered by a beehive shaped vault (which had partially collapsed). The culmination and height of the original roof vault is therefore unknown. The corners of the central room are 'buttresses" composed of large standing stones and flat stacked stones. Maeshowe is part of a designated World Heritage site. Elevation is c.11 meters (36 feet) above sea level. Materials: Monolithic stone walls and capstones, with stone and earth covering.
