Nan Madol

Micronesian culture, Saudeleur dynasty, 2nd century CE to Micronesian culture, Saudeleur dynasty, 2nd century CE to 1628 CE, Island of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, in the Western Pacific. This city was constructed between 1200-1500 CE and abandoned 1628 CE due to lack of fresh water. The city, covering an area of 4416 acres, consists of a series of artificial islands built on a coral reef and linked by a network of canals. The raised platform islands contain the remains of high-status dwellings, possibly used by island chiefs, ceremonial sites, mortuary structures, and various domestic sites.

Elevation is sea level.

Materials: Islands of crushed coral walled in by walls of local prismatic basalt rock, with the largest at 80 tons.
