Toba Batak: Rumah (house)
Toba Batak culture, North Sumatra, Indonesia, from c.1000 B.C.E., still in use. Materials: post and lintel wooden structure, wooden walls and thatched roof; Bamboo and coconut wood are used for the non-load bearing elements; roofs are thatched with leaves of sugar or coconut palms, but nowadays often replaced by galvanized iron roofs. Steep inclined roofs insure the tropical rainwater drains away swiftly and safely; overhanging eaves provide shade for rain protection for the windows; wooden structure uses wedges instead of nails, with pegs and lashing techniques at the joints. The base structure is stabilized by a system of beams connected to piles to provide a place for livestock during the night. Elevation is close to sea coast.
