Hanoi Tube House

A Classic example of the "Tube House" built in the late 19th century C.E., is this house at 87 Ma May Street in Hanoi, Vietnam. It is a row house along the street, like many others, and these can be two stories high, 70 meters. deep and as narrow as 2m. wide. This house type was developed as an attempt to minimize taxes, which was based on width of street facing facade. Multiple interior courtyards along the length of each house brings light and natural ventilation into the otherwise dark interior. This example is comparatively wide from the norm.

Elevation is c. 17 meters (56 feet) above sea level.

Materials: timber frame and ceramic tile roof.
