Vertical Axis Windmils of Ancient Persia
Persian Culture; invented 500 C.E. to 900 C.E.; a vertical pole with attached reed covered pads is placed in front of a wind funnel of adobe walls; the Bernoulli effect results in the rotation of the pole axis, which was attached to a grinding stone inside the adobe building below; located in present-day Yazd, Iran.
Elevation is c. 1426 meters (4680 feet) above sea level.
Material: Unfired adobe brick wall, mud brick vault, wooden and reed mat rotor.
