SOUTHEAST ASIA AND AUSTRONESIA

The Austronesian language family includes about one-fifth of the world’s languages, and spans the largest area of Earth--from Madagascar to Easter Island, and from Taiwan and Hawaii to Timor and New Zealand. The cultures of these islands were prolific seafarers and explorers; the span of the language group to the eastern islands of Polynesia suggests the possible contact with North and South America in ancient times.
